One hundred and seventeen (117) firefighters died while onduty in 2004. This level of fatalities continues a disturbing upward trend in the number of firefighter fatalities. Even if the horrible toll of September 11, 2001, is set aside momentarily, more firefighters have died each year onduty in the past several years than would be expected after the lower loss years in the 1990’s.
